Tough Poultry The year was 1958. It was my first job in radio at WABJ in Adrian, Michigan. There were two full time announcers, me and Phil Donahue. It was a 250 watt AM. The signal went across the street to a used car lot. I was doing the early morning farm report. The story off the wire announced that there were 30 year-old chickens for sale. I read it as thirty-year-old chickens. I stopped and asked on the air "Who would want thirty-year-old chickens?" I started laughing and never recovered until the manager came in and blew me out. - Jerry Carr |
Ocean French Purse I was engineering a spot and the talent had to fill a 20 second donut in a 60 second spot. Part of the copy included the words "Ocean Fresh Perch". He just couldn't get it. Take after take he kept flubbing it. Cart after cart is discarded. I am recording directly onto cart as it's only a donut fill. FINALLY.. he gets it! Hooray! Oops! I had accidently put a 40 second cart in the machine, and naturally it ran out before the spot ended. When I told him he had to do it again, he flipped. I think we changed the copy to "Perch, fresh from the ocean!" |

| Shinking Piers A memorable bit comes to mind for a sewing machine shop in northern Wisconsin. The line that took me 16 takes to read without screwing it up "...featuring precision scissor and pinking shear sharpening." It looks easy, but try it at about 1am after a l-o-n-g show. - Rich Lunde |
In One Ear.... My favorite copy phrase is "for all your _____ needs". I call this "for all your roast beef needs"...the ONE thing I haven't had to say yet. - Gabby Parsons |
Can You Teach Radio? While teaching a copywriting class at a broadcasting school in New York, I assigned my students to write spots using as many cliches as possible. Guess what? They sounded a lot like the stuff we have to say every day! - Linda |
